Guides: become the answer AI engines give

AI assistants no longer rank ten links: they compose a single answer and cite a few sources. These guides explain, signal by signal, how to maximise your chances of being the brand they pick.

1. Publish a complete llms.txt file

The /llms.txt file is the AI-engine equivalent of robots.txt: it summarises your business and lists the pages you want reused in generated answers.

Place it at the root of your domain. Include the brand name, value proposition, commercial pages, FAQ, proof points (reviews, certifications) and an official contact. Update it whenever your offer changes.

  • File reachable at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt
  • One to three sentence business summary
  • Links to offer, pricing, FAQ and contact pages
  • Mention of the geographic areas you serve

2. Structure your data with Schema.org

AI engines rely on JSON-LD markup to understand who you are. Without structured data your pages are ambiguous and harder to cite.

Add at least Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage, then Product, Service or FAQPage on dedicated pages. Validate every page with the Schema.org Validator before publishing.

  • Organization / LocalBusiness on the homepage
  • Consistent name, address, phone and hours (NAP)
  • Service or Product on offer pages
  • FAQPage on frequently-asked-questions pages

3. Consolidate customer reviews

Reviews are a major trust signal that AI engines reuse to recommend a company. A steady volume with thoughtful replies weighs more than a single rating.

Centralise reviews on Google Business Profile and an industry platform, reply publicly and cite these sources on your local pages.

  • Complete and active Google Business Profile
  • Recent reviews (under 90 days) visible
  • Public replies to positive and negative reviews
  • Review platforms referenced on the site

4. Strengthen your source pages

An AI cites the page that answers the buying question most directly. Your pages must cover pricing, lead times, service areas, guarantees and use cases in clear, self-contained sentences.

Avoid jargon: write as if answering a customer. Each paragraph should be quotable out of context.

  • One page per main service or offer
  • Explicit answers on pricing and lead times
  • Named geographic areas
  • Short sentences, independently quotable

5. Monitor your citations in AI engines

Technical work only matters if you measure the outcome. Regularly test real prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and record which sources get cited.

Use the audit tool to generate prompts tailored to your brand and market, then track the trend month after month.

  • Recommendation prompts tested each month
  • Cited sources recorded per engine
  • Comparison with two local competitors
  • Tracking of the presence score over time
